As a community activist, Kween Jasira is primarily devoted to two causes:
First - she serves as President of the DeMarion Sankofa Foundation, which was founded in honor of her late father - Henry Earl Marion. This foundation services her hometown area (Aberdeen, MS) by providing academic scholarships, community service grants, financial assistance grants, and young entrepreneur grants to those in need).
Second - she has a desire to #ProtectOurYouth from child sexual abuse. That mission is realized through her child advocacy efforts via the promotion of preventive education and healing through the arts. Having experienced child sexual abuse multiple times between the ages of 9-15 years old, Kween Jasira was floored to find that our children’s chances of being sexually abused are greater than their natural chance of being born left-handed. Via her advocacy work, Kween Jasira provides or helps to facilitate the following services:
Education & Preventive Services (workshops and presentations targeted for children (12 and under), for teens (13-17), and adults
Group & Individual Therapy
Healing through the Arts (Afrikan dance & drumming, theater, etc.)
Community Service
Survivors Network (for adult survivors of child sexual abuse)
Kween Jasira has also sponsored several child sexual abuse prevention events throughout the city of Memphis - such as discussion panels & open mic events, movie screenings, and artistic events (i.e. Hit the Floor, Rock the Mic). As a result of her work, she has been honored with the following awards:
